This document provides a systematic process for listing every subcontractor impacted by a field decision and mapping the interface conflicts between their work zones before any physical change is made.

The trade identification process goes beyond simply naming trades. It requires mapping the physical interfaces between each trade's work zone—where plumbing penetrates structural framing, where HVAC ducts cross electrical conduit runs, where finish trim meets fire-rated partitions. By documenting these interfaces and confirming that each affected foreman has been notified and has acknowledged the change, teams prevent the most common source of trade disputes: "nobody told us."

A plumbing reroute may affect the structural framer, the drywall installer, the fireproofing contractor, and the finish carpenter.

2. Where are the physical interface points?

Identify the specific locations where one trade's work connects to or depends on another's. These include penetrations through structural elements, connections between mechanical and electrical systems, and transitions between finish materials. Each interface point is a potential conflict zone that must be coordinated before the change proceeds.

3. Has each affected foreman been notified?

Contact each affected trade's foreman directly—not through a general subcontractor meeting. Document the date and time of notification, the foreman's verbal or written acknowledgment, and any concerns they raised about sequencing, material availability, or workspace access.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guide

Follow these steps to identify and notify all affected trades before executing a field change:

  1. Walk the Affected Zone:

    Physically walk the area of the proposed change with the superintendent. Note every trade's work that is present, in progress, or scheduled in the zone. Check above (ceiling, structure), below (slab, underfloor), and adjacent (walls, partitions, MEP shafts).

  2. Map Interface Points:

    For each trade identified, document where their work physically connects to or depends on another trade. Note the specific grid lines, elevations, and system types at each interface. This map becomes the coordination checklist for the change.

  3. Notify & Obtain Acknowledgment:

    Contact each affected foreman individually. Explain the change, show the interface map, and ask for concerns about sequencing or materials. Document the notification date, the foreman's response, and any adjustments needed. Only proceed with the change after all affected trades have acknowledged.
